4 DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

Don’t go to the pet supplies store. Instead make a Halloween costume for your pooch that is easier, cheaper, and more fun!

Splash and Dash for Dogs has assembled 4 simple do-it-yourself costume ideas for Halloween

Harry Potter

Pet Supplies Items Needed:

  • Black Cloth
  • Red Cloth
  • Orange Cloth
  • Black Pipe Cleaner
  • Adhesive
  • Safety Pin

Instructions:

  1. Cut black cloth to fit measurements of your dog. Taper cloth with thinner side slightly larger than the circumference of your dog’s neck.
  2. Cut red cloth into the shape of a tie and fashion to your dog’s collar with a safety pin
  3. Cut four to five strips out of the orange cloth.
  4. Glue strips accordingly to red cloth tie.
  5. Twist pipe cleaner into two circles.
  6. Connect circles by twisting another pipe cleaner around each circle.
  7. Wrap two separate pipe cleaners to either side of the circles, connecting down into form of temple tips of eye glasses. Fashion comfortably onto the face of your dog.

Stalk of Corn-Dog

Pet Supplies Items Needed

  • 12 Craft Foam Balls
  • Yellow Spray paints
  • Velcro Patch (Adhesive Side)
  • Spray Glue Adhesive
  • Exacto Knife
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Pinking Shears
  • Yellow Fabric
  • Green Fabric

Instructions:

  1. Measure your dog
    1. Shoulder to rump
    2. Mid-Chest to back leg
    3. Chest Circumference
  2. Cut each of the craft balls in half right in the spherical center. Large dogs will needs no more 24 half circles for each kernel of corn, and small dogs will need less depending upon the size of your dog.
  3. Place half styrofoam circles down on the newspaper and spray each yellow. Do this outside, or in a well ventilated area.
  4. Measure and cut the yellow “corn” part of the cloth. Measure ⅓ the of the chest circumference measurement starting from the fold of the fabric. Example if your dog has a chest measurement circumference of 30 inches mark off 10 inches. After marking, cut with measurements made.
  5. Using yellow cloth use the pinking shears to cut out 3inch wide by 8 to 12 inches wide strips for the straps. Cut according to dog’s size.
  6. Using the green cloth draw leaves into the fabric and cut them out. Any style of leaf will work.
  7. Attach velcro to the front side of each leaf piece.
  8. Pin the leaves to the yellow fabric while your dog is wearing it to ensure measurements.
  9. Sew each belly strap with a line through it.
  10. Sew a seam about 1 inch from the edge of the green fabric  joining the yellow and green  fabrics together.
  11. Flip the fabric over the sew another seam about 1 inch away from the end of the yellow fabric. Repeat steps 9 & 10 for the other leaf.
  12. Add velcro to belly straps. Lay the costume out flat extending the straps flatly against ground. Add 2 inches to the chest circumference measurement accounting for the belly straps. Make marks and cut the excess fabric. Cut a good three inches of velcro then attach them to opposite sides of the straps.
  13. On the yellow cloth–which should now be attached the green leaflet cloths and belly straps–glue yellow kernels on so that it resembles corn.
  14. Let dry and put it on and go trick or treating.

E.T. Extra-Terrestrial

Pet Supplies Items Needed:

  • Milk Crate
  • White Towel
  • Safety Pin

Instructions:

  1. Safety pin the towel around the dog comfortably so that the towel fits around their head.
  2. Place them in the crate.
  3. Take picture and go trick or treating.

Diva Dog

Variation 1

Pet Supplies Items Needed:

  • Pink Boa
  • Plastic Jewelry

Instructions:

  1. Cut or fold boa according to your dog’s size.
  2. Wrap plastic jewelry around your dog careful to maintain dog’s comfort.

Variation 2

This one takes a trip to the your local dollar store. All you have to do is buy a small tiara and and plastic jewelry for your dog to wear.

  • Plastic Tiara
  • Plastic Jewelry

Instructions

  1. Adjust size of accessories as necessary to fit tiara around the crown of your dog’s head.
  2. Cut of fold plastic jewelry to accommodate your dog’s size.
