New Pet Supplies Goggles For Dogs

Dogs work alongside humans everyday. Whether it’s fire rescue K9s, or the Lou Dog that hangs out at your local surf shop, doggies love to work with their owners. A big concern for laborers that work in conditions where eye protection is needed, is for their dogs. Pet supplies goggles for dogs provide the same protection they would for humans.

Ultra Violet rays, debris, and wind can all damage the eyes of both humans and dogs. Trekking through the snow is also dangerous when sunlight reflects from the snow.

This was the concept behind Rex Specs, part of the pet supplies market. Rex Specs is a goggle designed solely for dogs between 30-110 lbs. Small breed goggles are currently being developed. The goggles strap securely to a dog’s face, with full jaw motion, and are shatter proof. They protect from debris and the polyurethane the goggles are with are  U.V. resistant. The inventors, Jesse Emilo and Aiden Doane, are both dog lovers.

They figured if humans need eye protection in hostile environments, so do dogs. Splash and Dash thinks these goggles are pretty cool. Both in style and in utility.

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

We absolutely love videos with features like this. The focus of this video centers around Muttville, a California based dog rescue that caters to the senior dog. Sherri Franklin–Founder of Muttville–was working at local shelters in her neighborhood. She noticed a hole in the dog rescue system. Over 75,000 stray animals in America shelters have no choice but to euthanize a senior dog. Dogs who are not adopted are basically put on death row. Very sad.

Franklin took it upon herself to start her own dog rescue. She works alongside San Fransisco animals shelters. Muttville has a focus on problems outside the animal shelter’s  limits. This is how Muttville became a reality.

The non-profit works alongside shelters all over the city to help find loving homes for the senior dogs. From the beginning of the non-profit, to the time the video was posted on September 2, Franklin has helped over 4,000 senior dogs find homes. This is amazing! We salute this woman for her efforts, and hope that Muttville continues to grow.

Muttville is an amazing accomplishment. It is a rescue mission that is benefiting everyone. “People who never got out to the house, now know their neighbors, because they walk their dogs everywhere,” Franklin said.

We at Splash and Dash love seeing hard work through the kinship of a senior dog can give way to a better world. Over at Muttville, this is happening everyday!

Is My Dog A Wimp?

Splash and Dash for Dogs knows that knows pet owners feel secure away from their house. Because just like us, they know their dog is there to guard the property. Inside Edition published a demoralizing feature from their YouTube channel with a video titled, How to Test if Your Dog Will Wimp Out During a Burglary. Dog trainer Mike D’Abruzzo specializes in training guard dogs. He asked by the news organization to pose as a burglar. D’Abruzzo has taken some bites to provide accurate pet news to the world.

D’Abruzzo wore padded clothing and went to three different houses to inspect the dog guarding capabilities of ordinary dogs. He wanted to see if they would protect the house, or wimp out. The first house was home to two Bernese Mountain Dog. These dogs are huge and can have an intimidating bark. D’Abruzzo is able to open the door without any problems and dogs actually want to play with him.

Next are two mixed breeds from a family that swears their dogs will attack if anyone approaches the house who is not part of the family. D’Abruzzo is able to get into the house and the dogs bark at him “meekly,” but once they smell him they are completely docile and friendly. D’Abruzzo is able to take off with a laptop.

The last dog put to the test is a yellow labrador. Again, the family states confidently that this dog is a great guard dog. They might be in for shock when it comes to their pet news. But when D’Abruzzo breaks into the house to burglarize, the yellow lab is MIA. D’Abruzzo is able to snatch a buddha statue without any problems.

Splash and Dash for Dogs thought this was a hilarious and poignant look into the reality of the guard dogs we have at home. Don’t worry our dogs are probably wimps too!

Rescue Dog Gets New Home

Splash and Dash for Dogs loves to see stories of survival. There are thousands of stray cats and dogs in America and most of them are severely neglected. Nonprofits like the Humane Society of the United States and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals do so much to rescue these animals. They are true visionaries in the pet care world. This video is from the Humane Society and is titled, Dog rescued from serious neglect thriving in new home. The video is about Piper–a mixed breed rescue puppy–and her new owner Julie. Piper was found in a puppy mill in Ohio. She was missing one eye, most of her teeth, and could barely stand on her own. The conditions in the cage Piper was found in were disgusting and unsanitary. The Human Society took action and rescued Piper. They found her a new home with Julie and she is doing much better. Piper is currently rehabilitating and learning to walk on her own. She has gained a lot of weight and looks so much healthier! Julie bought a backpack to put her in when walking because she doesn’t have the stamina to walk with the other dogs. Splash and Dash for Dogs chooses to post videos like this because we believe in the efforts of these non-profits and encourage others to watch, donate, and adopt a rescue of their own.

#Barkmyvote Campaign aired on Fox & Friends for Dogs to Vote for President

CEO and Founder of Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique Interviewed on Fox Morning Show for Bark My Vote Marketing Campaign

Sept. 29 (6;40 a.m. EST) – This Morning, Dan J. Barton appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss the merits of the Bark my Vote campaign with For Anchors. The segment aired live, and is available to view on the Fox & Friend’s website. The Splash and Dash segment featured six dogs, with three anchors interviewing Barton on the street in New York City.img_1045

Fox anchors joked with Barton, saying “Is it in Dan Barton, or Bar-kton?”

After the pun introduction, the interviewers asked how the Bark My Vote challenge began. “I have a Yorkie at home who loves politics,” Barton said. “When we watch the news in the morning, her ears just perk up when there’s politicians on T.V.. That’s what started the idea. How cool would it be if they could vote with us?”

The Bark My Vote campaign works just like the regular voter booth–only with dogs. A mat is placed on the ground with an elephant shaped cookie representing republicans, and a donkey shaped cookie for the democrats.
Whichever cookie the dog picks, casts their ballot for either party. The cookies are all natural, organic, and colored patriotically. The parties are a little different in this political arena. One party, the Re-pup-licans. The other, the Demo-cats.

The polls are open now at www.barkmyvote.com

img_1046Gus, the pug went straight for the elephant cookie live on air. The pug even went back for more of the cookie, and Fox anchors joked “He’s voting twice.”

Fox anchor asked Barton after the dogs voted,”Now does the Demo-cat taste like high taxes, and the Re-pup-lican taste like a wall?”
Barton laughed saying, “No we wanted to be fair.”

The segment ended showing the dogs sniffing around the treats as they got ready to #barkmyvote.

The Fox anchors included Ainsley Earhardt, Brian Kilmeade, Steve Doocy.

ABC’s ‘Morning Blend’ Features Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique

Dan Barton, CEO and Founder, of Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique was invited to participate in ABC Action New’s local lifestyle show “Morning Blend” to discuss the Bark My vote Campaign. The campaign is a lighthearted fun non-partisan way for pet owners and their pets to take part in the election.

Barton did a demonstration for the anchors with a friend of the franchise–a collie mix, named Bailey. The episode of Morning Blend that features Barton and Bailey will air Friday the 26th at 10 a.m. EST, and Barton’s segment will be between 10:20 and 10:40 a.m.

IMG_0619[1]The “Morning Blend” portion will feature Bailey casting her vote on air. The Bark My Vote mat was placed on the set ground with a Democratic and Republican side. The corresponding political cookies were also placed on either side of the mat. Depending upon which cookie–donkey shaped or elephant shaped–Bailey chose would cast her doggie ballet. Bailey sniffed and licked at each cookie but didn’t take either treat during filming. News anchor Carley Boyette joked with Barton that Bailey is an independent.

“Bailey did great,” Barton said. When asked about his experience with the “Morning Blend.”. “They thought it was a cool idea,” he said. “They asked some great questions and she did a great job!”

Barton created the Bark My Vote campaign with his dog Mercedes–a Yorkshire Terrier. The idea was to get pets involved in the political act in a fun way.

“People are really digging it,” Barton said. “Everybody’s loving it so far!”

Bark My Vote ballots will be counted until Sept. 30th. The process happens in three steps. First, get your dog to vote by either coming into a Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique, or ordering political party treats online here. After your doggie has casts their ballot you can hashtag #barkmyvote to get your pictures and posts of your dog into the political arena. After this you can sit back and watch the votes come in at www.barkmyvote.com or follow Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique on social media and watch who gets the dog vote in this year’s election.

The American Pet Market for Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day approaching this weekend, chances are you are thinking about who you want to be your Valentine as well as what you will get them. For many people, this will simply be their pet. There have been a few studies into Valentine’s Day and pets released for this year and here are the findings.

Estimated Spending for Valentine’s Day

shutterstock_110591582__1455210743_22829According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are projected to spend $18.9 BILLION on Valentine’s Day this year. Of that number, they estimate that $703 MILLION will be spent on pets. This is not a small figure and one that has been rapidly growing as the pet industry becomes larger and larger. The more people see their pets as family, the more this number grows.

Another thing these studies found was that people will buy an assortment of things for their pet. It could be a comfy new memory foam bed or a sweater with hearts on it. The most common gifts though are toys and treats for pets. According to a survey from Trupanion Pet Insurance, the average person will spend $25 on their pet this Valentine’s day.

If you are planning on buying something for your dog this Valentine’s Day, then you can find the perfect gift at your local Splash and Dash. We offer adorable accessories, deliciously beautiful treats, and much more to make your dog happy. If you’re not sure what to get then we can even help you out!

People Prefer Their Pets Over Their Significant Othershutterstock_128131268__1455210780_80058

An interesting study released from Trupanion Pet Insurance on the topic of Valentine’s day and pets showed that 47% of the people they surveyed would rather spend the holiday with their pet than with their significant other. This study did not take into account aspects such as the length of the relationship or relationship status of the surveyors but it is interesting none the less. maybe it is because people recognize the unconditional love of their pet and want to give them love in return. Just remember there is nothing wrong with having more than one Valentine.

The Scary Chocolate Trend at Valentine’s Day

Featured-Feb-Image-5Most pet parents know their dog should not have chocolate as it is toxic to them. However, Trupanion reports that last February alone they received claims for 56 cases of chocolate consumption. This led to more than $20,000 in veterinary bills. Keep in mind that this is only one pet insurance company and some people do not have pet insurance.

It is never OK to give your dog chocolate. If you want them to have the sweets in the spirit of the Valentine’s holiday then the best thing you can do is to give them carob treats, the dog safe alternative to chocolate. In the same manner, if you plan to take your pet to a dog friendly restaurant for the holiday, make sure any food you share does not have ingredients that are toxic to dogs.

Why This Year’s Dog Grooming Deaths are Worth Discussing

If you haven’t been paying attention to your social media feed, there has been a new death during dog grooming. Colby, a beautiful and sweet 2 year old golden retriever died after being in a Petco grooming salon. Long story short, he was put in a drying kennel at the location and then died of a heat stroke according to the vet. Petco claims their drying kennels do not release heat, but they have taken them out of all Petco locations to prevent this from happening in the future.

dog groomingSo Does This Mean Dog Grooming is Dangerous?

Many pet parents out there are jumping to the conclusion that this means that grooming is not safe for their pet. Mostly this is out of fear that their dog will die while in the care of the groomer, which something no one wants to go through. However, it is important to note that these deaths are far and few between. Dogs do not die every day. Most dogs come out of the grooming salon feeling and looking great and regular grooming  can help keep them healthy. Even Colby had been going to the same Petco grooming salon since he was a puppy.

However, It Does Mean That You Should Choose Your Groomer Carefully

Some people think that just because the grooming salon they take their pet to is a nationally recognized company that they will get the best care. This alone should never be the reason you choose the salon you send your pet to. You want to choose a grooming salon that has experienced groomers who know what they are doing and ones that will care for your pet as their own. Only then can you have the confidence to know that your pet is being treated properly.

While We’re on the Topic of Choosing a Grooming Salon…

It should also be noted that price should never be your main motivator when choosing a grooming salon. A lot of people choose the big name brands like Petco and Petsmart because they have cheaper prices. Again, it is essential that you find a grooming salon where you know you will get the high quality care that your pet deserves. This does not mean that big pet stores cannot provide great care for your pet. Simply do not assume that you will get that level of care. Also, judge each location individually rather than assuming they are all the same.

pet_grooming_servicesWhat Does This Mean for the Pet Industry

The real thing that many are taking from this unfortunate incident is that there need to be pet safety standards established. No pet parent should have to fear that their dog will have something happen to them when they go into the grooming salon. While getting industry wide standards may be difficult, it can be done with some work from organizations and passionate pet parents who want to be able to ensure their pet’s safety while in the grooming salon.

URGENT – Dog Influenza Outbreak in the Midwest

Just this morning the news was filled with talk of a dog influenza outbreak in Chicago. Dog influenza is extremely dangerous to your pet, especially if left untreated. In order to better protect your dog from catching this illness, it’s important to know where it comes from, what it looks like, and what to do next if you believe your dog has caught it.

What is Dog Influenza?

Dog influenza, also known as canine influenza virus (CIV) or kennel cough, is a respiratory disease that has affected thousands of dogs in the United States in the past due to similar outbreaks even though it is still a relatively new virus. It’s so new that most dogs have never been exposed to it before which puts them at a much higher risk of infection. With that said, dogs of any age, breed, and vaccine status are susceptible to the disease.

How Do Dogs Contract Canine Influenza?

Canine influenza is transmitted between dogs through a combination of aerosols, droplets, and direct contact with respiratory secretions. The virus does not have a long air life, so for your dog to become infected, he would have to be in close proximity with another dog. This could be through play in the house or dog park or through cuddling with other dogs who have already been infected. On that note, dogs who interact with large groups of dogs are at a much higher risk than those who do not frequent dog parks, daycares, or dog beaches.

What Are the Symptoms for Dog Influenza?

Because canine influenza affects the respiratory system, you can expect the following symptoms in any combination if your dog has been infected:

  • Clear Nasal Discharge that Becomes Thick, Yellow-Green Mucus Overtime
  • Coughing
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Rapid/Difficult Breathing
  • Sneezing
  • Variable Fever

Most dogs will show typical symptoms of kennel cough if they catch it, however some may develop a more severe illness that could ultimately include death if the illness is not caught and treated early on.

What is the Cure for Canine Influenza?

If your dog is showing any of the above symptoms, you should call your vet immediately. Kennel cough is very similar to the human flu, so there are no antiviral medications, but treating the sickness correctly is imperative to your dog’s recovering health. One of the best things you can do during this time of illness is to provide attentive and appropriate care for your dog. Some treatments include:

  • Building to the Treatment for Pneumonia
  • Making Sure Your Dog is Staying Hydrated
  • Medication to Treat Secondary Bacterial Infections
  • Providing a Quiet, Warm Place for Rest
  • Providing Good Nutrients and Immune-System Raising supplements

Depending on the severity of your dog’s case of dog influenza, you will need to take different steps. For a standard sickness, your dog will fight it off themselves within 10-30 days. If it progresses to secondary infections, your pet will require antibiotics, and if the illness turns into pneumonia, hospitalization will be required immediately.

Minimizing the Spread of Canine Influenza

Humans don’t have to worry about catching the dog virus, so you are freely able to take care of your dog without fear of falling ill. If you believe your dog has been infected, it’s best to isolate your dog for 10-14 days after diagnosis. Do not think that because your dog isn’t showing heavy symptoms, they are not contagious as your dog will be the most contagious before symptoms become apparent. If you have multiple dogs and one appears to have caught kennel cough, isolate him or her from the rest for the time being in order to minimize the spread of infection.

If you believe your dog has caught canine influenza, don’t panic as it’s generally curable. Just make sure to take the right care and you will be just fine.

St. Petersburg, FL – June 9, 2015 – During a routine dog grooming appointment at PETCO’s Midlothian store, a dog named Colby died after being placed in a dryer cage too long. Colby’s death was the result of the store’s animal care protocol not being properly followed by employees.
