4 DIY Halloween Costumes for your Dog!

Don’t limit your Halloween crafting just to your human family members. Get all members involved, including your fur babies. We’ve compiled a list of super creative DIY dog costumes to try out on four-legged friends of all sizes.

Just be sure to start desensitizing your dog to wearing articles of clothing and accessories prior to Halloween if you want them to wear the outfit for a longer period of time. Otherwise, put the costume on and snap a photo before the dog rips it off.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter fans have found dozens of ways to transform their pooches into their favorite Wizarding characters, and the results are beyond cute. You can repurpose scarves and glasses you own, or you can make glasses using pipe cleaners.

Materials needed:

Colored scarf (depending on which house)

Pipe cleaners (mold into glasses)

Starbucks

This Halloween costume is super easy to recreate using cardboard, a Starbucks logo, and a to-go coffee lid as the hat. If you have a different local coffee shop you prefer, just swap out the logo. This is a very easy and very cute costume to do!

Materials needed:

Plastic coffee cup lid

Cardboard cutout with Starbucks logo design

Superhero

Depending on your superhero of choice, this costume idea can go a number of ways. Two essentials are a felt mask and a cape. This black ensemble works well for a rendition of Batman. This type of look is great for golden retrievers or yellow labs, perfect to get into the Halloween spirit with a black mask and cape!

Materials needed:

Cloth (color depending on design)

Scissors

Superpowers (just kidding)

Lion

If you like knitting, consider giving this dog costume a try. This get-up looks especially believable and cute on lighter toned dogs. All you need to complete the lion’s mane is some medium weight yarn, circular knitting needles, and a crochet hook.

Materials needed:

Yard

Knitting needles

Crochet hook

7 Tips To Keep Your Dog Safe This Halloween

Halloween is a great opportunity for families, friends, and pets to dress up and play pretend in the real world. Whether you’re staying in with your pet and handing out candy or hitting the streets to get all the candy you’ll need for the next year, dog safety is just as important as safety for your kids.

Here are some of the best tips to maintain dog safety this October 31st:

1. Candies are Tasty for You but Bad for Your Pup

Whether they are chocolates or sugar-free gummies, they are equally unhealthy for your pet and can put your dog at risk. Chocolate is a known substance that is bad for dogs and may cause diarrhea, vomiting, increased heart rate, and even seizures. Meanwhile, sugar-free candies often have a substance known as xylitol which can have the same effects as chocolate on dogs. Keep dogs safe by keeping the candy for the kids.

2. Make Your Dog Feels Safe at Home

dog safety tips halloweenIf your home happens to experience a lot of foot traffic during Halloween night, you may want to consider how your dog will respond to the sound and where they may go if they’re feeling nervous. Dog safety doesn’t just take place outside of the home, but it starts with the feeling of fear every time someone rings your doorbell or knocks on the door. You should barricade any possible access your dog has to the front door if you fear your dog running every time it makes a sound.

3. Always Supervise Your Pet

Whether someone is shooting off fireworks, egging houses, or just being rowdy tricksters, there is an increased danger to dog safety on Halloween. It’s important to minimize unsupervised outdoor play on regular days, but on nights like this, it’s best to avoid it completely as some pranks can just be downright cruel and dangerous.

4. Watch Out for Pumpkins, Corn, and Candles

pet safety at halloweenPumpkins can be particularly tricky for dogs as many treats are made with pumpkin. However, your dog can become ill from eating old pumpkin that’s been sitting outside and may be rotten. Corn is hard for dogs to digest and should never be given to dogs as food. What makes Halloween even more dangerous for your dog, is that candy wrappers can be found all over the sidewalk outside after a long night of trick-or-treating.

5. Properly Tag Your Dog at All Times

Dog collars and tags should always be worn for year ‘round dog safety. It’s particularly important on a night made popular with mischief and constantly opening doors. Before Halloween night, double check that your dog not only has appropriate, readable tags, but that the information contained on them is still accurate. Include pet name and your phone number minimally.

6. Cover Cords and Consider Decorations

pet safety at halloweenWhile most decorations have child warnings on them, they do not necessarily take dog safety into consideration on the label. As fun as cobwebs, skeletons, and an electronic grim reaper can be, also consider where the cords may be lying and whether your dog will get into anything. If your pet is a chewer, you may want to minimize the number of decorations you set up until the chewing has passed. This way you avoid choking hazards, accidental electrocutions, or glass swallowing.

7. Dress for Success and Dog Safety

When it comes to costuming your pets, there are a few key tips to keep in mind such as never forcing a dog into anything that makes them uncomfortable or irritable. Consider the weather this time of year. If you live in a hotter or colder climate, dress your pet appropriately. If your dog isn’t used to wearing clothing, try it on and let your pet wear it around enough to get used to it in small doses before the big costume party at the end of the month.

Happy Halloween, from your family at Splash and Dash!

Easy Trick or Treating Tips to Get the Best Dog Food

For many, Halloween is the best day of the year. You get to dress up as your favorite character and go for a walk to get delicious treats. More and more people are involving their pets in the Halloween festivities. If you are planning on doing this, then there are some tips you will want to keep in mind from dog food to costumes and everything in between.

Tips for the Costume

The first thing you will want to think about is whether or not your dog is comfortable wearing a  costume. There are many dogs who like to be au natural, corgi in a lobster costumewhich is perfectly fine. You do not want to force a dog who does not want to wear a costume to do so as this will cause undue stress which is never healthy for a dog (or person).

If you do choose to put your pup in a costume, make sure it fits them properly. Restrictive costumes can injure your dog when worn for long periods of time just as costumes that are too big can cause a tripping hazard for the dog. Be sure that their tags are on even with the costume in the event that they get loose. It is also helpful to have your dog wear the costume several times before the big night so they are comfortable in it.

Staying at Home

If you plan to stay at home with your pet and hand out candy you can still dress your dog up. Trick or treaters love to see your dog all dressed up as this is part of the fun with the holiday. Here are a few tips to consider:

  • Put down dog food before people start showing up. Eating the dog food beforehand can help to make your dog more calm.
  • Also, take your dog outside before as well so this is not an issue.
  • If you have pumpkins, be sure to use flameless candles in them to keep your dog from knocking them over.
  • Some people find it helpful to start working with their dog a few days before by continually knocking on the door or ringing the bell so the dog is not too stressed when the day arrives.
  • For dogs that are easily stressed out, create a calm space for them or even invest in a thundershirt.

Going Around the Neighborhood

Dogs dressed up as ghosts with halloween treat buckets in their mouthWhen you go trick or treating, it can be a lot of fun to take your dog with you. While your dog cannot eat candy- especially the chocolate kind- this does not mean that they cannot enjoy the night themselves. Many pet parents choose to make small healthy treats for their dog. This dog food gives them something they can give to people who want to feed their dog during the night.

It is also a good idea to have someone go with you. This way there is one person watching the children and one watching the dogs. You want to make sure you are aware of your surroundings which is hard in the dark and two sets of eyes are better than one. Also, make sure you have doggie bags in the event that your pup has to potty while out.
Finally, having a well trained dog is imperative to creating a safe and fun environment on Halloween. Your dog should know basic commands, such as leave it in the event that they come across candy or other items they should not have. With the right dog food and attention to detail you can have a fun and safe night on Halloween.
