Salon Grooming Hairstyles Gives Pup Instagram Fame

How Salon Grooming Got this Dog 38K Followers on Instagram

As people who work in salon grooming, who are surrounded by cute dogs every day—we get it. We are obsessed with dogs. Our clients are obsessed with dogs. Most of the world is obsessed with dogs! Or cats, depending on your flavor of the week. One thing is for sure. Cute animals of all sizes of fluff and stature are in the Splash and Dash repertoire. We sit back and admire the salon grooming at the Westminster Dog Show, our clients’ dogs, and most recently the Instagram account moem_n.

The account belongs to a Japanese woman named Yuki and features her famous dog—Kuma. Combined, the two have an Instagram account that spotlights all the zany salon grooming Kuma gets on any given day. Photos of Kuma, the Pekingese-Shih Tzu mixed breed, shows the dog with all kinds of hair arrangements like intricate braiding and hair looped out to look like hearts.

The salon grooming that Kuma gets is so fashionable it’s hard to tell Kuma is a little dog and not a little girl. I guess the black button nose and small pink tongue gives it away, but seriously her hair is straightened and has fewer split ends than most celebrities. Five-star salon grooming!

We at Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique think Kuma is quite the novelty, but all dogs are beautiful! Hope you enjoy!

Dog Makes Amazing Tackle and Recovers Fumble

National Football League Should Look to Pet Supply For Defensive Line

One of the biggest incentives for dogs is small, round, and found at the pet supply store—a ball. Whether it’s a KONG rubber squeaker, or a professional leather cowhide football, dogs can’t get enough. They chase them down. Place them at our feets. Then plead, “Please throw the ball again.” It’s a symbiotic relationship between inanimate object and canine. There is nothing more pleasing than visiting the pet supply store, getting your dog’s favorite ball, and heading to the dog park for an old fashioned game of fetch. Dogs can’t stop. Won’t stop. One of the Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique’s favorite ball-fetch toys is the tennis ball flung from a lacrosse stick. Pet parents don’t even need to have to be Tom Brady to throw a perfect arched touchdown pass right to your dog’s mouth with this pet supply toy.

That is why today’s viral video is home video footage of a dog making the best turnover play of any professional football career, titled “StanleyTackle.” The video was uploaded by YouTube user tayloredsales. It is steadily going viral and has over four hundred thousand views at the time of writing. The video is a true highlight reel. It is all of 38 seconds of glory. A family is playing with their pet supply football out in the backyard. A young kid is going long for a pass and catches the ball. No problem right? Wrong. One of the family dogs comes in hot and makes the tackle sending the kid spiraling to the ground, football knocked out before he is down. Fumble!

The dog, never missing a beat, swiftly recovers the fumble to make an impressive return on the turnover. This why dogs rule the pet supply aisle. Maybe even the sport of football. They have mastered fetch and now are moving on to a real challenge. Don’t worry the kid is okay. He gets up and quickly asks the cameraman, “Was that on film?”

Yes. Yes, it was. And we at Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique loved every second of it, and we hope you do too!

6 Fun Tips to Naming Your New Puppy

Whether You Just Brought Home a New Dog From the Rescue, Breeder, or Reputable Pet Store it is Time to Give them A Proper Name

Having a dog is awesome–they are man’s best friend and they will love you loyally and always be there for you. Introducing your new dog to the house is always an interesting experience. They sniff around–get comfortable. Big transition from the acclaimed breeder, pet store, or dog rescue.

One of the most important parts of training any dog no matter if they’re a puppy from the pet store, or a senior dog from the dog rescue, you’re going to need to house train them to your specific house rules. This means naming them.

Combing through pet store name guides is fun, but this article aims and helping you brainstorm fun and clever names for your new pooch.

Old School Cool

Take it back to the 1950’s, why not even the 1920’s? Nothing beats personifying old Americana culture like naming your dog after the regal and chivalrous names of past generations. I have always told myself if I got a Bulldog, I would name him Angus.

Female names like Ladybird, for our former president’s wife’s name, or Hank’s dog from the T.V. show “King of the Hill” makes a great female name. Who wouldn’t want to name their girl dog something stoic like Agatha, Ursula, or Frieda. On the other side, if you have a guy dog you could give them a distinguished grandpa name like Eugene, Harvey, or Wilbur.

Strolling through the pet store will never be the same with a dog like Humphrey…Bogart.

Childhood Memories

Forget “Old Yeller.” It still makes me cry. Pet stores should ban that movie, or at least make it come with preface. Anyways, childhood memories of great movies about everyone’s favorite mischievous canine are always a great source of inspiration for naming your dog.

Milo and Otis, My Dog Skip, Beethoven, and of course Lassie, are just a few to name from. Try popping in old VHS tapes of “All Dogs Go to Heaven,” for some suggestions. The possibilities are endless with this scheme.

Big fan of the Jungle book? How about Mowgli?

Match the Look

A dog’s coat can the best way to gauge what their name should be. One of my friends has a Pit Terrier with a Diamond on her back, and she was affectionately named, Diamond. Pet store name guides have tons of varying names to choose from in this category.

If your dog has a white coat you could call them Snow, Snowflake, Powder-puff,  or Ivory. Brown coat? Brownie, Rolo, Chocolate, Coco, of Fawn.

If they have a Leopard pattern name them Kitty, Leopard, or Bengal.

Play around with word association and synonym ideas. If you’re dog is really muscular, name them Arnold, for Arnold Schwarzenegger, or if you’re feeling really goofy–Terminator.

Greek and Roman Mythology

We’re naming planets after them, so why not our dogs right? The pet store naming guides have plenty of these too. One of my favorite Rottweilers I’ve ever met was named Apollo, and I met a very noble Mastiff at the dog park named Magnus. The world record for largest dog in the world was named Zeus.

Athena or Juno make great ones for a female dog, and you can have the possibility to choose a mythology that matches your lifestyle. Enjoy a nice glass of wine? You could name your dog Dionysus–the goddess of the grape harvest, wine, and merrymaking.

Not a bad idea, right?

Your Favorite Dish

These are a little silly, but let’s face it, we spend most of the day thinking about what are going to eat for dinner anyways so why not name our dog after some delicious food?

Imagine yourself calling your dog in, yelling, “Cupcake! Here girl!” or, “Pizza! Come here buddy!” Names are gender neutral so don’t feel held back by the limits of pet store naming guides.

Just picture your favorite food, and tah-dah! You have your new dog’s name. “I love you Macaroni, you’re the best dog ever!”

Maybe something like Alfalfa, T-Bone, Bacon Fish, Bagel, Lemon, Biscuit, Kale, or a crowd favorite–Peaches.

Personality Rules

  1. You’re getting to the last pages of a pet store name guide and everything just seems…generic. Maybe you need to spend a few days with your new dog to get a feel for them before naming them. Some pet parents have the name picked out before they even see the dog, others spend the first week debating names, and even still none of the names seem to match.

Hang out with your dog first.

Maybe you have a Whippet who jumps from the love seat to the couch? Why not Hopppy? Maybe they have a goofy bark and love to show it off–Bowser. (By the way Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique pet store has a guide to help with unwanted barking. Click here).

Is your new dog the lazy type, maybe a little sluggish? Name them Slug, or Snoozy. Maybe your dog’s just a little cuddle puddle of love, you could always name them after a guy who sang all about love, Bob Marley–Marley for short.

Marley’s such a great name for dogs they might as well start selling reggae CD’s at the pet store.

You Picked a Great Name, now What?

Some pet stores and rescues name the dog before you took them home, but don’t worry this name won’t stick. Dogs have an uncanny ability to switch names even well into their life. Canine experts believe dogs will begin responding to their name after a few days. Puppies too senior dogs, they will eventually learn who they are, and how much they’re loved.

The best way to teach a dog their new name is to use constant repetition. If your Golden Retriever goes outside for the first time, use a friendly voice to reinforce their name, and the good behavior. “Good Goldie! Good potty!”

Sometimes dog’s ignore their names when they associate it with negative connotations. If your dog is prone to chewing and you scold your dog with their name after finding the evidence, “Bad Goldie! No!” They may think the name only refers to negativity.

When you are first house training your dog use positive mental links with their name. Say their name and give them a treat or pet them. Keep at it! They’ll know their name in time.

Happy National Mutt Day

Pet News: The Holidays History

National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by Colleen Paige, who also founded National Dog Day, National Cat Day, and National Puppy Day. Paige is an animal behaviorist and activist in the rescue and animal lover community and makes pet news repeatedly.

The holiday is celebrated twice a year, once on July 31st, and then again on December 2nd. The idea of the holiday is embracing, saving, and celebrating mixed breed dogs.

Celebrating is easy, just pet your dog.

Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique loves all dogs, and loves the opportunity to help raise awareness to the largest percentage of euthanized animals in America. According to The Human Society, every year three to four million animals are euthanized of the five to eight million animals entering one of the 13,688 shelters.

Our hearts go out to every single animal suffering and we honor those doing their part to help bring this to attention to pet news enthusiasts and those researching into their next pet.

Pet News: Puppy Mills and Designer Dogs

There is nothing wrong with owning a purebred dog. The American Kennel Club recognizes 187 purebred dogs and we love every single one of them. The same can be said for mixed-breeds–they’re all amazing dogs.

What we do take issue with, are puppy mills.

Puppy mills, which supply pet stores around the country have atrocious conditions in which dogs are bred. Puppies are housed in crates stacked on top of crates, fed unsanitary water and food with algae growing in their bowl, and sometimes don’t even have proper lighting. Dogs are bred in darkness. Many dogs in puppy pills experience an undeniably cruel life quality.

Dogs never get the human interaction, love, and the socialization they need to be healthy. Dogs became emotionally and physically traumatized.

In pet news–Melanie Kahn–of the Human Society reported seeing, “Dogs that are scarred of grass because they have never seen it before.”

This is why National Mutt Day exists. To urge people to make informed decisions about getting a pet. Many unknowingly buy animals from pet stores that are supplied by puppy mills. Doing this only perpetuates the puppy mill business and continues the suffering.

Pet News: All Dogs Are Great!

Many pet experts disagree on what animal is genetically preferable, mixed breeds,or purebred. This schism has made pet news for a long time, and Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique acknowledges that this is a question of preference–no matter what breed or mix breed dog you have, they are all loving animals.

According to a study conducted by Bellumori in 2013 which took 27,000 dogs and examined them in comparison to the rate of incidence of 24 common genetic disorders in mixed breeds versus purebreds.

Here are the pet news findings.

  1. The incidence of 10 genetic disorders (42%) were significantly greater in purebred dogs.
  2. The incidence of 1 genetic disorder (ruptured cranial cruciate ligament, 24%) was greater in mixed breed dogs.
  3. The rest of disorders examined found no difference between mixed breed and purebred dogs.

What this means, is that inbreeding within purebred dogs occurs, and has a tendency to cause biological maladies because of lower genetic pools. However, when buying a pet from a reputable breeder, these things happen less, and usually not at all.

No matter what choice you make you pet selection, please make and an ethical and informed decision.

Happy Mutt Day!

4 Adorable Do-It-Yourself Presents

Holidays are Around the Corner

Everyone loves their pets. It’s not secret that our dogs and cats are like our children. Your dog and cat’s stocking above the mantelpiece are just as important as everyone else in the family.

When they wake up Christmas morning you’ll want to get them something that will make them loved. Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique will be supplying a one-stop-shop for all your pet supplies needs this holiday season.

But also fun is making gifts for your pet. This pet supplies article will give you 4 do-it-yourself ways to make sure the lovin’ is spread nice and thick for your pets this holiday season.

Sock and Ball Toys

These toys are great! They have all the bounce of a regular tennis ball for outside play, but you also have the double feature of a tug-of-war toy. If your dog loves fetch and has great agility with typical pet supplies, than you can swing this toy over your head to launch it long and far. There are three variations of this toy.

  1. You can simply tuck a tennis ball inside a sock.
  2. Wrap a tennis ball into a shirt and cut and braid creatively.
  3. hread a braided T-shirt through the hole cut into the center of a tennis ball.

Pet Supplies:

  • Tennis Ball
  • Scissors
  • Old T-Shirts

Collapsible Travel Dish

When on the road traveling to relatives and friends for the holidays it’s always difficult to accommodate for our pets without the proper pet supplies. Any pet owner whose had to cup their hands for a makeshift bowl, or pour aimlessly into a dog’s mouth with most of the water spilling onto the ground knows the pain.

That is why making a collapsible travel dish will make your life easier and your pet feel loved.

Note: When purchasing oilcloth ask about pet safe options since your dog will be drinking from this product and some oilcloths contain chemicals that should not be ingested.

Follow this link for extensive directions.

Pet Supplies:

  • Oilcloth, two colors
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Scissors
  • Low-tack painter’s tape
  • Bone folder
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Heavy-duty sewing machine needle

Rope Toy

This toy is a fun durable toy for teething puppies or any dog that loves to chew. Give them something they’re allowed to chew with a DIY rope toy. Anyone who is good with knots should be good at making this toy.

Pet Supplies:

  • Rope
  • Zip Ties
  • Lighter

Directions:

  1. Start with two equal lengths of rope no shorter than 5 inches.
  2. Find the middle of each length of rope by folding the rope in half and lining up cut ends.
  3. Cross each rope in the middle at a right angle.
  4. Tie a Carrick Bend knot where the rope is intersecting and brain upwards.
  5. Braid all the way until there is less than inch of rope left.
  6. Cut excess rope and burn back exposed nylon.
  7. Trim zip tie tail back so it’s not exposed.

Kitten Tent

The classic DIY project is great anytime of season. Cats love little cozy places they can cuddle up in. Also the smell permeating from a pet owner’s used shirt can help ease separation anxiety with dogs. It’s super easy to make and is safe for pets.

For extensive directions on how to make this DIY pet supplies present click here.

Pet Supplies:

  • T-Shirt
  • 15 x 15 inch Piece of Cardboard

Amazing! Animals Can Use Technology Just like Humans

Tech Savvy Animals From the Pet Shop

Every morning we leave the house and make the usual check. Wallet. Keys. Smartphone. Maybe even a tablet, or a laptop for work. Our kids use know how to use computers better than we do, but now even our animals are catching on. But my dog at home can’t do some of the things these animals are doing on this video. They are truly incredible.

Today’s viral video is titled Tech-savvy Pets || Funny Pet Compilation. The video was uploaded by one of Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique’s favorite YouTube channels The Pet Collective. This channel features videos that range from cute to amazing. One thing is for sure–you’ll never be disappointed. Now I don’t feel foolish for leaving the T.V. on for my doggies anymore! People at the pet shop told me I was crazy for doing that haha.

Compilation Video

The video is a compilation of pets displaying their more tech-savvy skills. It starts off with a cat riding a robotic vacuum cleaner down the hallway. Even more impressive is what happens next, when a cat answers the phone. I think my personal favorite is a Miniature Greyhound that is playing a game on a tablet. The little Greyhound punches and paws at the screen just like a little toddler human would. Now if only they sold tablets at the pet shop.

The most impressive of all the videos is probably a cat who has been trained to ring a bell to get a treat. The cat’s owner takes away the bell and replaces it with a phone with a bell app and the cats still hits the phone screen to make the bell ring. Take that Pavlov’s dogs!

Another fun video that was featured is a smart little French Bulldog solving a puzzle toy to get a treat. Toys like this are available online or at the pet shop.

Baby Goat Meets Baby Puppy

Pet Groomer Dreams: Baby Goat Meets Puppy

If you watch this video get ready for a cuteness overload. You have been given fair warning, it is beyond adorable! Today Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique gives you a pet groomers dream video of a 4-day-old goat meeting with a four-month-old Golden Retriever. Our hearts just about exploded with happiness after we clicked play.

The video was uploaded March 2, 2016 and already has over a million views making these two animals viral stars. Everyone seems to be watching these two on YouTube. The YouTube user, and probably owner of the animals, Sean cadden put this video online for the masses to fall in love with. It is appropriately titled, 4 day old goat meets 4 month old puppy, but we would have called it watch these two furballs of love meet each other.

The video is three minutes and 31 seconds long, and every second is amazing. While you watch you can tell the baby goat is still getting used to walking. The goat is a little shy and the puppy is super excited to meet his new buddy. The goat walks up to the puppy and smells curiously at the doggies face.

You can hear the pet owners in the background calmly soothing their excited Golden Retriever saying, “Be nice,” “He doesn’t want to play with you if you’re gettin’ too wild.” The puppy is a typical clumsy guy and starts running back in forth trying to get the goat to play with him. The goat just kind of stares at the puppy in confusion. Haha!

Once the little billy goat is bigger these two are going to be best friends.

Puppies Try Things for the First Time

Pet News Puppies Try New Things

We have found a groundbreaking video in cutesy pet news. Read below to dive into the lovable world of puppies.

Watching a puppy figure out the world around them is one of the cuttest and most heartwarming things known to man. If you like watching these kind of videos, you’re not alone. The internet is overflowing with adorable videos  like these for you to browse through. Don’t feel guilty about it. Studies have shown that watching videos like these online actually helps lower cortisol–the stress hormone. This video is one of the cutest we’ve ever found. Footage of all different kinds of breeds of puppies go through the confusions of life for the first time.

The video is titled, Puppies Learning Things For The First Time, and was uploaded by the YouTube channel BuzzFeedBlue.

The video begins with three adorable little French Bulldogs finding out, that behind the back door there exists a whole new world called ‘outside.’ The puppies stumble over the sliding glass door frame, and are hesitant at first. They’re still trying to get their bearings. Soon they’re over the door frame and running in the grass for their first time ever. When the French Bulldogs learn how great the grass is in the backyard, this is nothing short of breaking pet news.

Our favorite moment in the video is when a little Golden Retriever puppy plops into the water for his first time. His parents are with him and he watches as they swim happily in the water. You literally see the little guy muster the strength to slide head over heals into the swimming pool. You can bet he ran to tell his brothers and sisters the glorious pet news that wet stuff isn’t so bad.

We’re proud of all these little guys at Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique and we hope you enjoyed the video!

Sweater Weather Makes Dog Snore

Sweater Weather Makes Dog Snore

Finally it’s that time of year again! The days a shorter, pumpkin spiced lattes are being served, and we can break out those awesome Fall sweaters again. The cold air makes everyone a little more lazy, even our dogs. This video shows the laziest dog settling into the cold air in this YouTuber bmusilTV’s video, little doggie Rocket.

Rocket is snoozing away with his brown sweater which is keeping him warm. His snoring is anything but subtle. You can tell the little guy is dreaming about chasing cars, as he twitches in his sleep. Rocket’s snoring sounds like Grandpa’s snoring during the lull is the Macy’s Day parade. Deafening, with a couple of intervals of sniffling.

This doggie’s snore fest is captured in this hilarious video as he rocks the cutest pet supplies sweater that looks more like a cardigan on this distinguished pup. You can tell this dog is getting closer to his golden years, because he’s sleeping with his eyes open. Another quirky characteristic of Grandpa that Rocket has in common. Quriky, and sometimes even a little creepy. But hey, we think he’s a super cute old man.

When the cold weather turns to snow, Splash and Dash recommends getting your dog a cool sweater so they can look stylish and stay warm this Fall. Enjoy the video!

Pet Store Antics of YouTube Celebrity Siberian Huskies

Pet Store Antics: Three Huskies Go on an Adventure

One of the best things about visiting everyone’s  favorite pet store, Splash and Dash Groomerie & Boutique, is taking your dogs with you. That way, they can pick out their favorite toys and treats. It’s like taking your kids to the toy store, but dogs usually behave better. Usually. This video shows Husky owners taking their three Huskies through a pet store in Gaylord Michigan. The video was uploaded by the YouTube channel Gone to the Snow Dogs.

This channel features Huskies Oakley, Shelby, and Memphis–all sisters–and what the dogs are up to daily. Gone to the Snow Dogs uploads videos of the doggies playing in the snow, or eating homemade watermelon treats. They’re cute little home videos of the dogs. This video titled appropriately, HUSKY GOES SHOPPING | Pet Store Trip for the Dogs–shows a little glimpse of the hilarious and sometimes ridiculous ordeal of taking your dogs to the pet store.

The three Huskies go through the usual excitement. The pet owners find a rastafarian cap with fake dreads as a cute Halloween costume for their dog Oakley. The owners take their dogs on a full tour of the pet store, where their dog Memphis finds a kinship with the bird department. The dog stares and sniffs at the bird cages utterly mystified.

The dogs are well behaved and pick out some of Splash and Dash’s favorite treats, Wild Blue, then call it a day. Enjoy the video! It’s a dog person charmer.
